Ronaldo beats Messi to win Golden Foot
A new individual trophy for Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar, currently at Juventus, was nominated on Wednesday to receive the Golden Foot 2020, an honorary award created in 2003 and awarded “for extraordinary players who have made entire generations of fans dream, achieving incredible feats”.
This trophy does not therefore reward the best player of the season but decorates a footballer for his entire career.
The prestigious Golden Foot award is awarded to a player who is at least 28 years old. Over the years, players have been declared the winner of the Golden Foot award on the basis of their achievements in world football. As many as 10 players are shortlisted for the famous trophy and the winner is announced through an online vote from a panel of journalists.
The winner gets to mark his footprints on The Champions Promenade in Monaco. While legendary Roberto Baggio was the first ace footballer to get honoured with the inaugural Golden Foot trophy in 2003, Ronaldo has become the latest entrant in the elite list to win the special award.
Ronaldo defeated the likes of Messi, Neymar, Robert Lewandowski, Sergio Aguero, Sergio Ramos, Mohamed Salah, Gerard Pique, Giorgio Chiellini, and Arturo Vidal to win the race for the Golden Foot 2020 award. In his bitter-sweet stint with Juventus so far, Ronaldo has claimed the Serie A Most Valuable Player award and the Serie A Footballer of the Year trophy.
