Malaysia’s mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Toh Ee Wei and Yap Roy King-Teoh Mei Xing experienced mixed fortunes at the Orleans Masters in France yesterday.
Veteran Peng Soon, who is turning out as a pair with Ee Wei for the first time, failed to get going as they crashed to a 22-20, 18-21, 21-18 defeat by Indonesia’s Zachariah Josiahno Sumanti-Hediana Julimarbela in the first round.
It was a disappointing outcome for the pair, especially Peng Soon after he returned to BA of Malaysia’s fold last year.
The 2016 Olympic silver medallist, who ended his long-time partnership with Goh Liu Ying, had started the year well by reaching the quarter-finals of the India Open with Valeree Siow.
But a reshuffle in partnership didn’t work out well for Peng Soon who will have to rethink his next move.
Zachariah-Hediana, meanwhile, go on to meet the Finland-Czech Republic pair of Anton Kaisti-Alzbeta Basova in the second round.
While Peng Soon-Ee Wei faltered, their compatriots Roy King-Mei Xing did well to clear their first hurdle. The duo defeated Denmark’s Mads Vestergaard-Natasja Anthonisen 24-22, 21-15.
In other matches, women’s singles S. Kisona was left to rue missed opportunities after losing 22-20, 22-20 to Indonesia’s Rusilli Hartawan. Eighth seed Rusilli will play compatriot Putri Kusuma Wardani or India’s Ashmita Chaliha next.
