Yiwen to miss Indian Tour in Jaipur due to illness
National squash player Chan Yiwen is likely to miss the Indian Tour in Jaipur after being floored by viral infection.
The tournament in India starting on Jan 30 was to be Yiwen’s first assignment this year after she left the Philippines SEA Games half way following the death of her father due to heart attack last month.
Yiwen, who lost to teammate Rachel Arnold in the women’s singles final in the SEA Games said she had been vomiting and had been down with diarrhoea since Tuesday night.
“I went to the National Sports Institute (ISN) for treatment (yesterday) and the doctor confirmed that I had viral infection, ” said the 19-year-old.
“I felt weak and dehydrated. I’ve told to rest for two days. If my condition worsens, I’ll have to be admitted in the hospital.
Yiwen admitted that the last two months had been a trying time.
“First, I lost my dad, who was my No. 1 fan. I skipped the Indian Tour in Mumbai last month and missed training for two weeks. Now, I am down with illness, ” said Yiwen.
“I won’t be able to train and I do not know how long this will go on. I’ve informed my coach Ajaz (Azmat of Pakistan) about my situation, ” said Yiwen, who is ranked 92nd in the world.
Ajaz, who only started the training session with Yiwen at the start of this month, hoped the latter would recover soon.
“She is a dedicated athlete. I hope she will recover in time and we will monitor her condition, ” said Ajaz.
